People often say things like “I don’t understand how you are a Christian, you’re so logical and the Bible is so illogical and full of crazy, unbelievable stuff.”And while the Bible is complex, complicated, and requires a lot of time to really crack… it’s no less logical than most any and everything people believe in today.
If you’re Atheist you believe there was nothing before there was something, and that something came from it, even though you still can’t fathom what that nothing was. You believe that there is no higher power, but yet you live by a moral/ethical code you can’t quite “identify” the root of.
If you’re agnostic, you likely either believe in Kharma, or say that “the universe” is with/against you, you might wish on stars or 11:11, you won’t step on cracks, or you just avoid wearing certain socks on certain occasions because it feels like bad luck. You might even believe in an afterlife, or souls or spirits and you don’t have the foggiest reason why, except to say you hope it’s true.
If you’re a science-driven person, you believe in and back the latest theories, fight for them vehemently, and have no problem adjusting them when new data are presented…. (which, to note, I agree with entirely). Buuuut… ironically, during the vehement fighting… you never once acknowledge that (historically speaking)… will almost definitely be proven wrong to (to some extent) in the future… meaning that a little more humility, a little more openness, a little more “maybe,” and a little less certainty might be the best course in all discussions.
We are creatures who need to know things, and we are uncomfortable when we don’t. So oftentimes instead of accepting that we are only partially informed and there is room for changing… we say we “know” what we only should “believe” and vice versa. The result being that we lock ourselves into systems that we defend to the death, despite that fact that new info has invalidated some major portion of it. (Yes, among others I’m speaking to non-Christians who’ve sensed the divine and dismissed it because “that’s ridiculous”… the idea that particles are only in a single position when observed is also pretty ridiculous, but here we are.)
That being said, this blog isn’t here to promote believing in things without knowledge. On the contrary… It’s to allow you to consider that “belief” can exist without having to “know” completely (and how you do already). I want to create a space where big questions can be called out and wrestled with, without having to dissolve them completely. A place where new concepts can coexist with old ideas, and both lived out until the experience of them proves their validity or lack thereof. A place where talking about anything black and white is a red flag, because if it’s that simple… it’s because you don’t fully understand it. (Yes, I know that the opposite of what Einstein said, but I think they are both true simultaneously, like “Schroëdinger’s logic.”)
Also, to be clear the goal of this blog is not to convince you to be a Christian. It’s not to convince you of anything, honestly. (I believe God IS truth and if you seek it you will find it with or without me.) But more importantly, this blog is here to challenge your assumptions, acknowledge your biases, find your blind spots, and to add new perspectives to old paradigms.
And particularly, I invite you to ask yourself how many truths you’ve avoided and how many objections you’ve created against the Bible all because “that’s not physically possible,” “that doesn’t make sense,” or just “I don’t like what he said there” (Spoiler: chances are you don’t understand the context), Truth is, a lot of things fit in all those categories, but you overlook them because doing so doesn’t inconvenience you.
TL;DR…
This is a not a blog about belief or disbelief. It’s a blog about identifying and challenging beliefs, and belief systems… and then learning to thoroughly suspend them; without categorization, without judgment, without prejudice… as you add, subtract, multiply, divide and twist them into new beliefs… so that you can finally be open to see (or feel) what you’ve been missing all along.
We’ll talk about biology, manifestation, mythology, neurology, new age practices, psychology, physics, and flat out logic. I won’t talk in philosopher-speak but as practically as possible about the world we experience, the way we experience it, the ways we interact with it, and how the idea of God is not contrary to any of it… in fact, God is what fills the gaps when your experience runs out of explanations.
So… if you’re ready for a bit of a ride… let’s go.
